Chandra Grahan 2017 or the Lunar Eclipse on the 7th August 2017

Chandra Grahan 2017An eclipse is a rare divine phenomenon which has a very high significance in Hindu Dharma Shashtra. On 7th August 2017 Chandra Grahana will be visible in India and this celestial opportunity should not be missed for performing anushtanas recommended in the Dharma Shastras. These are Snana (Bath), Japa (mantra chanting), Tarpana (oblations to ancestors) and Dana (Donation) and again a bath after the eclipse.

Where to See the Eclipse

Regions seeing, at least, some parts of the eclipse: Much of Europe, Much of Asia, Australia, Africa, East in South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Antarctica.

The eclipse is a period where whatever you do multiplies by more than a 1000 times. For example if you do a Japa of “Om Namah Shivaya” once this will be equal to 1000 times. Similar for Dana and Tarpana. There is a very important speciality of this particular Grahan on 7th August 2017.

This Chandra Grahana occurs on a Monday which is the day of Moon so a special yog (celestial occurrence) is created. This yog is called Choodamani Yog as per Shastras. Therefore any Japa, Tarpana or Dana done during Choodamani yog will be automatically multiplied by 100,00,000 (one crore times). This means that the merits you will fetch by performing these anushtanas are more can a crore times.

Chandra Grahana sets on
7th August 2017 at 10.52pm and
ends on 8th August 2017 at 00:48am
(Total duration 1 hour 55 minutes).

During Chandra Grahana all will get an Asoucham/Theetu/Impurity/Sutak –  9 hours before the prahar/yamam in which the grahan occurs. You need not worry about this calculation, as the time is already calculated. The Grahana/eclipse impurity with start from 12:43pm (afternoon) of 7th August 2017. This time is important to keep in mind as you cannot consume any food on 7th August 2017 after 12:43pm till end of eclipse. This means you should remain fasting from 12:43pm upto the end of Grahan. For the elderly, sick, children and pregnant women there is a relaxation that they can start their fast from 07:11pm on that day upto end of the grahana post midnight. Since from the beginning of this impurity 9 hours before the grahana the kitchen should be closed and no food should be cooked, the food cooked earlier in the day before 12:43pm can be consumed by these special category of people before 07:11pm.

Chandra Grahan 2017Grahana (Eclipse) Rules and what to observe

What should you do before 12:43 pm?

  • You should finish you morning breakfast and afternoon lunch before 12:43 pm on 7th Aug 2017,
  • Put minimum 2 blades of darba/kusha (grass) on top of each container of food items like, rice, atta, dal, raw vegetables, ghee, milk, curd, pickle etc. This darba grass is put to prevent the harmful radioactive waves generated during the eclipse from making the food harmful to us.
  • Any food which is cooked on fire that day and has been consumed like, roti, chapatti, rice, sambar/dal,  curry etc should be thrown away and not kept in the fridge.
  • Uncooked raw items to be used daily/regularly should be protected with darba grass blades.
  • Sharp at 10.52 pm in the night when the actual Grahan period starts, you should have a head bath with clothes on (dhoti and angavastram/uparna) and during the bath chant the Chandra Grahana protection mantras – “Om Shraam, Shreem, Shroum Saha Chandramase Namaha”.

This grahana also affects people belonging to Uttarashada, Dhanishta, Shravana, Rohini and Hasta Nakshatra. As told earlier that the Grahan period amplifies your mantra japa crores of time.

  • After bath, change to dry clothes (dhoti and angavastra) and sit on a mat and start “Mantra Japa”.
  • Men who have had their upanayan sanskar can do Gayatri Japa. Each Gayatri you chant will give you merits or phal of 1 crore Gayatri chanting.
  • Those who have not had upanayan sanskar/ladies and children can chant any mantra of their Ishta devata. Like “Om Namah Shivaya”, or “Om Vishnave Namaha” or “Om Durgayay Namaha” or even slokas or Sahasranamas. This mantra Japa should continue till the end of Grahana which is at 00:48am on 8th August 2017.
  • In case you have some danam (donation) to give then you might have to cut short your japa at little before the end of the eclipse and make time to give dana.
  • Please note that this danam should be only done during the Grahana period for earning countless punya as Grahana has multiplying effects of whatever you do. Shastras say that any danam you give during Grahana is equivalent to Bhoomi danam (gifting a land).
  • Shastras mention you can give gold/silver/rice/clothes/money to a needy brahmin.

There one more important karma/duty to perform during Grahan which is for men who do not have father or father and mother. That is tarpana with til and water with sesame seeds. Doing a tarpana during the Grahan period satisfies our ancestors for 1000s of years, and more merits/punya is added to your spiritual account. This tarpana should be done 20 to 30 minutes before grahan ends. Since it should be completed before grahan adjust your time accordingly.
Therefore in nutshell during by the beginning of Grahana take bath, then sit for mantra japa, danam if possible, then tarpana (only for those who don’t have father/ father and mother) and finally once the Grahana is over at 00:48am you should see the moon and then take another head bath compulsorily, with clothes. Then you can come change into dry clothes. If feeling hungry you can consume some fruits for the night (ensure that fruits also should have been covered by darba grass during the eclipse)

Special Instructions to pregnant women.

In case of a woman who is pregnant in the house she has to be extremely careful as Grahan could have harmful effects on the unborn baby and exposure to grahana period even if inside the house can cause deformity in the baby. Shastras mention that the pregnant lady should lie down in the centre of a room away from window on a mat, all doors of the house closed, covering her full stomach with darba grass (darba is scientifically proven to block radioactive Xrays) and covering herself in full blanket from head to toe. No body part should be exposed. She should lie down like this from start to end of Grahan period mentally chanting names of Kuladevata or Ishtadevata.

These rules are for all varnas/castes as per Dharma Shastra and all should follow these rules of Chandra Grahana,

Knowingly or unknowingly in Kali Yuga all of us do lot of sins. This eclipse is a golden opportunity to increase your spiritual punya account/merit account. Do not miss this celestial opportunity at any cost.
